Why The Rice?
I get this question a lot because the rice that exist in all of my painting. Rice is the one consistent food that we all consume, it is one of the connecting factors to all races and people. My work is about engagement and the redesigning of critical thinking as it relates to perception. I embed rice in my painting when I begin the process starting a new painting as a foundational material for my wood cradles with gesso. This rice acts as a texture sometimes and others its a discovery conversation. I have been using rice in my paintings for years and I enjoy dialoguing about the narratives that people share as they discover the rice.
Rice is also a reflection of the farmed and cultivated materials aside from cotton that my ancestors grew during slavery. Upon further investigation I realized that rice reflects us all, I have never encountered a culture of people who don't have rice in their diets. As a Christian we throw rice to represent prosperity and fruitfulness during wedding ceremonies. Could it be possible that God wants us ALL to be prosperous and fruitful?
